10 joules

10 joules is the maximum muzzle energy (measured 4 meters from the muzzle) a projectile may have for an airgun to be classified as license-free. For semi-automatic firearms, the limit is 3 joules. The muzzle energy depends on the projectile’s weight and velocity. This is why a 4.5 mm pellet travels faster than a 5.5 mm projectile, even though the muzzle energy is the same.

4.5 mm (.177) Diabolo

4.5 mm is the most common caliber for air guns. Small pellets and low weight result in high velocity. With 10 joules of muzzle energy, this caliber has a flat trajectory that makes it easy to shoot. However, lightweight ammunition is more sensitive to wind.
